Supervisor of Clinical Laboratory

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Clinical Laboratory Management, the incumbent is accountable for ensuring

that appropriate and timely specimen handling, delivery, specimen testing, results reporting, and

customer service are provided in an efficient and cost-effective manner in accordance with laboratory and

hospital policies and procedures. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring that all laboratory

procedures being performed in areas of responsibility will comply with all regulatory, accrediting, and

licensure requirements.

This position will be required to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends and

provide coverage for the department as needed.

The primary responsibility for this position will include one of the following (or a combination of all) areas

in the Clinical Laboratory:

Microbiology: includes the subspecialties of Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Virology,

Parasitology and Molecular Microbiology.

Core Laboratory 1: includes General and Special Chemistry, Blood gases, Immunology, and Serology,

knowledge of automation line and Remisol Interface preferred.

Core Laboratory 2: includes Hematology, Coagulation, Special Coagulation and Urinalysis.

Transfusion Services (Blood Bank): includes Blood Transfusion medicine, and Blood Utilization and

Waste.

Histology: includes Histology Tissue Grossing, Processing, Embedding, sectioning and Staining.

Preferred knowledge of cytology, including GYN and Non GYN specimens and Pap Smear preparation

and reading is suggested, IHC and special stains, Bone Marrow processing and Transcription.

Quality Management and Quality Control: Directs the collection of data for studies related to quality

improvement; including monitoring of patient turn-around times (TAT); Uses Transformational Health

Care fundamentals to optimize our patients health care experience. Manages CAP inspections with

oversight of laboratory document control to meet accreditation standards.

Nature and Scope

Incumbent will make operational decisions in conjunction or consultation with the Clinical Laboratory

Management regarding hiring, performance evaluations, employee terminations, etc. Technical decisions

regarding implementation of workflow policies and procedures will be made in conjunction with the

Clinical Laboratory Management and the Medical Director, and with the final approval of the Medical

Director. In this position, the incumbent is responsible for handling multiple priorities such as providing

testing services for trauma victims to routine medical patients and providing consistently accurate and

timely laboratory results to nursing and medical staff. It is the expectation that the Supervisor will actively

work in the department covering a bench no less than 20 percent and no more than 80 percent of their

scheduled time.

The major challenges of this position are supervising multiple employees, ensuring adequate staffing,

general supervisory duties and research and development of new policies and procedures. Innovative

cost reduction strategies are continuing areas for review to provide new opportunities and possibilities.

The incumbent must consider the age of the patient when any patient contact is initiated. Must be able to

communicate with a diverse patient population and their families when in contact. Positive customer

service behavior is expected at all times.

The incumbent must be knowledgeable of and observe all safety requirements in a laboratory and

hospital setting. Comprehensive knowledge must be maintained for all procedures that are required to be

performed. Competency in work related skills must be demonstrated annually.

Qualifications:

Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Name Description

Education: Requires a bachelors degree from an accredited

university in Medical Technology, or a closely related field according to currentapplicable state and federal regulations.

Experience: Two (2) or more years of medical laboratory experience as a nationally certifiedClinical Laboratory Scientist or Histotechnologist preferred.

License(s): A current State of Nevada Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Histotechnologistlicense required at time of hire.General Supervisor or General Supervisor with a Specialty is required within 7 months of hire.

Certification(s): National certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP) or Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) preferred; specialty certification in one or more areas of responsibility preferred.
