Senior Tax Accountant - Indirect Taxes. This position reports to a Tax Manager.

Our client is a rapidly growing convenience retailer with several brands under its umbrella. US operations include covering the majority of states in America. The tax team is currently recruiting for Senior Tax Accountant/ Indirect Taxes.

The individual in this role will need to handle both state and local taxes that fall under the indirect category. These types of taxes include, but are not limited to, sales, use, meals, petroleum, tobacco, property, real estate, and other miscellaneous items.

The selected candidate will also be responsible for monthly close activities and preparing account reconciliations for various state and local indirect taxes, and real estate / personal property taxes. This role will ideally also be involved in special projects (i.e. audits, research, etc.), providing assistance to other tax staff as needed.

  • Work independently to resolve tax issues and disputes with state agencies.
  • Assist as requested on indirect tax audits, or other projects as directed.
  • Work with other finance and operating groups to improve processes. 
  • Timely review of all assigned general ledger accounts, and prepare detailed reconciliations and variance analysis.
  • Prepare and review state and local indirect sales and excise tax returns utilizing various internal and external systems.
  • Responsible for the processing and purchase of cigarette stamp orders as instructed by the warehouse.
  • Accumulate and analyze large transaction based data sets required to prepare returns, account reconciliations and analyze results.
  • Improve and streamline existing processes surrounding critical processes.
  • Work with 3rd party providers and internal resources to code and process tax payments.
  • Technical tax resource for various indirect tax areas.

Who Will Be a Great Fit?  

  • Candidates should have at least three years of experience in a corporate environment spanning multiple states, or comparable experience gained through public accounting or tax consulting.
  • You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills for this role as it interacts with many different departments including Corporate Accounting, Finance/Accounting, Warehouse and Cash Management, IT–system group, State Revenue Agencies, Avalara-SUT software and Marketing.
  • Proficient in Excel and experience with tax research and compliance software is required
  • Accuracy and attention to detail; organized/proficient in time management
